It’s easy to think of bergamot as just another citrus fruit. But this little yellow gem is more than that. For one thing, it has a distinctive flavor all its own. It also has an amazing history of use in perfumes and cosmetics.

Bergamot is a citrus fruit that smells like an orange or lemon. It has been used as a perfume for centuries and was first used as a scent back in 1747 by Queen Elizabeth I’s court physician, Dr. Jean de La Fontaine (who would be best known now as the author of “The Fables”).

This particular fragrance contains both floral and citrus notes, which combine beautifully with other scents such as lavender and sandalwood, to make any lady smell truly ravishing. These scents also have a long history behind them, as they were used by many of the most popular European royalty and ladies of the early modern period. Bergamot-scented perfumes remained incredibly popular throughout that time and into the Victorian Era. They were considered to be a sign of wealth because only those with enough money could afford these fragrances.

What is Sandalwood?

Bergamot is a type of Citrus fruit that is sometimes called bergamot orange. It is a cross between the bitter orange and the lemon.

What does Bergamot Smell Like?

Bergamottin, which is found in the peel of bergamot, has a strong scent of what you might expect from an Orange or Lemon. To some people, it smells like grapefruit while to others it may smell just plain citrusy. The scent of the oil itself is not as strong as naturally produced Bergamot essential oil, but it’s still nice nonetheless.

Some possible uses for Bergamon Oil are in perfumes, fabric softeners, household cleaning products (especially when mixed with Eucalyptus Oil), baked goods, desserts and ice cream, candy, and even as a flavoring agent in many beverages.

In particular, Bergamot is used as a flavor in Earl Grey tea, which was named after Charles Grey, the second Earl of Stamford. In the 1820s he had a personal chef who came up with this recipe for making tea. Lady Grey, his wife, loved it so much that she started to serve it at parties and eventually it became a staple among all classes.

Today you can find bergamot scented products everywhere from your high-end perfumes or colognes to your everyday cleaning supplies or even just a simple bar of soap. From Citrus based flavors to savory dishes such as duck breast with orange-bergamot sauce, bergamot is everywhere.

It’s rather ironic that there could be a fruit out there that you can’t really eat unless it’s been processed into something else (like an essential oil or tea) but don’t let the potential health benefits of eating bergamot go to waste. It definitely smells nice enough to leave lingering in your home or on your skin, so if nothing else just use it for aromatherapy purposes.

Conclusion

Sandalwood is a key component in the fragrance sector. We adore it because of its religious and cultural ties as well as its wonderful scent. While there are different species of sandalwood, the majority of them smell exactly like what you would expect sandalwood to smell like – warm and slightly sweet. Sandalwood Essential Oil is used in aromatherapy to create a sense of calmness, relaxation, and for its naturally soothing qualities. This makes it great for use during meditation or before bedtime.
